Zakah for New Muslims — A Practical First-Year Guide (2026)

You don't owe zakah retroactively for the years before you took your shahada, and you don't need to wait for some special starting signal either. Here's exactly how the clock starts.

Zakah for New Muslims — A Practical First-Year Guide (2026)

Zakah has exactly three prerequisites, and being a new Muslim doesn't add or remove any of them. You're Muslim. Your zakatable wealth meets or exceeds nisab. You've held that level of wealth for one full lunar year. No precondition of age, tenure in the faith, or how long you've practiced is required beyond that.

When Does Your Clock Start?

Your zakah year (hawl) begins the moment your wealth first reaches nisab as a Muslim — not before your shahada, and not delayed further after it. If you already held nisab-level wealth the day you took your shahada, your first hawl starts that day. If your wealth was below nisab at that point and grows into it later, the hawl starts the day it crosses the threshold.

You are not obligated for any wealth you held or earned before becoming Muslim. There's nothing to backdate and nothing to catch up on.

Picking Your Annual Date

Once your first hawl completes, you'll want a fixed annual zakah date going forward rather than tracking each dollar's individual anniversary. Many people use the anniversary of their shahada, others use Ramadan for its spiritual weight. Either works — what matters is consistency, year over year, on the same date.

The Calculation, Step by Step

  • Total your cash, gold, silver, and cash-equivalent holdings at face value
  • Add investments (using the CRI method for long-term holdings, full value for active trading) and any business assets
  • Subtract debts currently due — this month's bills, the next twelve months of loan installments — not long-term balances in full
  • Compare the net total to the current nisab value
  • If at or above nisab, pay 2.5% of the full net total — not just the amount above the threshold

FAQ

I've never owned this much money before. Do I owe zakah on wealth I earned as a non-Muslim?

No. The obligation only exists for a Muslim. Whatever you hold from before your shahada is yours free and clear of any zakah claim from those years.

What if I'm not sure whether my wealth has stayed above nisab the whole year?

Check your balance on your chosen annual date. That single snapshot, compared against the current nisab value, is what determines the obligation — you don't need a perfect record of every fluctuation in between.
